The presenter submission form must be fully completed in order to be considered for a breakout session. An email confirmation receipt detailing your submission will be sent to the email address of the Lead Presenter only.

All presenters and co-presenters of selected presentations must register and pay the conference registration fee. Selection decisions will be emailed to the Lead Presenters within 45 days of the submission deadline date.

The Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) graduation requirements are not meant to be a one-size fits all. The MMC content should be embedded into courses, experiences, and CTE programs, allowing students to gain proficiencies in meaningful ways. This session will cover the MMC flexibility options, including the personal curriculum and the application to CTE.

This session will provide teachers and administrators with ideas on how to recruit business partners within your communities. Think SALES 101! Teachers are accustomed to teaching in the classroom, but are not necessarily comfortable knocking on doors to introduce themselves to businesses in the community who stand ready to help them. These partners can be utilized for advisory committees and WBL as well as financial support.

Promoted: Professional Modularized Teacher Education at Ferris State University has been linking future and current CTE instructors to the classroom. Participants will learn about the application requirements and the coursework required for the Promoted Program. Emphasis will be placed on what it takes to be successful through a professional cohort.

The National Education Association has reported that an estimated 50 percent of new teachers leave the profession in the first five years of teaching. This presentation reports on the techniques used by districts to retain teachers and opens a discussion on other ways to retain CTE teachers.

In this session participants will learn how to seamlessly integrate STEM strategies into K-12 instruction that supports learning in a rapidly changing technological environment. This is a panel type discussion with multiple trades and the DOL Office of Apprenticeship to walk you through the entry process to apprenticeship, training, and graduation to Journeyman within the construction trades.

EMC Consortia programs serve multiple school districts within one coordinated EMC program. This growing type of EMC entity serves students from a variety of districts and works with administrators from a variety of districts; as you might imagine, the setup of these consortia programs comes with it’s own unique strengths and challenges. Career and technical education was mainly accepted after World War I in segregated facilities. The value of career and technical education diminished over time with emphasis on Higher Education. Today, employers seek skilled labor to maintain competitiveness. This session is an evolution of how facilities and mentor programs offer exploratory opportunities for students.

Connected directly to Student Career Development, in this session you will learn how to access free ACT®, ASVAB®, SAT®, and WorkKeys® practice tests (to name a few); conduct career exploration that includes video cards, current wages & trends, and up-to-date job postings; and explore career practice tests like Allied Health or Plumbing. Additionally, you will learn how to access free publications through the Michigan eLibrary such as CTE Journal, Counseling Today, and Techniques: Connecting Education & Career.

A cohort of seven software developer apprentices is on a fast track to a professional career in coding. Hear our team’s story from the sponsor and CEO of The Pesto Group – a Petoskey-based company, the computer science subject-matter-expert, and most importantly one of our first DOL Registered Apprentices. She’ll share her decision to select a work-based learning pathway over traditional college along with her initial experiences and reactions.

This session will provide an overview of the Perkins State Determined Levels of Performance for 2024-2028, the process used to set these targets, and results of public comment as well as next steps for submitting to update Michigan’s Perkins State Plan.

This presentation will provide a demonstration of the various CTE reports and dashboards available to public users, including CTE duplicated and unduplicated enrollment reports, CTE funding reports, CTE outcomes reports including reports of the CTE Follow Up Survey, Perkins Core Performance Indicators, credentials, and work based learning. It will also show demonstrations of the CTE MISchoolData reports page, and the interactive CTE Information System Data Dashboards. Reports are available for all CTE students and for student special populations categories and by race and gender as well as by region, CEPD, district, building, career cluster, and CIP Code. How do you get students to understand the opportunities and expectations in their career? Learn about a unique opportunity that utilizes community partners to immerse students in a patient care experience and address course competencies. The collaboration included the Michigan Health Council, Michigan Works, Hackley Community Care and CTE educators.

How do I recreate this experience? Part two will include more specific details of implementation and how to engage community partners. Students and educators who participated will share and describe their learning of how health care competencies were achieved and career ready behaviors developed. Participants will have ample opportunity to ask questions and develop ideas for implementation in their classroom.

Learn how CTE and district partners developed a goal to use design thinking to teach and engage kids more effectively and connect them to purpose and career pathways. The Michigan Resource Hub is a customized digital repository of resources designed to complement the current employment readiness programs and to supplement the daily lesson plans of educators and direct service staff. The Learning Management System hosted repository is an integration of an assortment of STEM2D and early career planning activities and modules. In partnership with Kalamazoo RESA and Youth Solutions, the school’s Career Leadership Council is rethinking how students explore careers and creating a culture of career development.

In support of current shortages, understanding the system of flexibilities (e.g., Annual Career Authorizations, Full-Year Expert Permits) will greatly expand a district’s hiring and staffing options. This session will review the available temporary credentials provided for in both law and Administrative Rule and provide examples of how to use them in expanding business and community partnerships.

Work-Based Learning is a key component of a CTE program, but how does it work? Learn from members of MCPA (Michigan Career Placement Association) about the in’s and out’s of workbased learning placements and ideas of how to get started

Educators will receive guidance on equipping students with essential navigation skills needed for future careers. Techniques for job shadowing, constructing resumes, nurturing soft skills, excelling in interviews, understanding LinkedIn’s potential, and bolstering confidence via mock interviews. Discover how to ready students for work-based learning, ensuring maximal benefit from these opportunities!

In this workshop, attendees will build replicas of human anatomy using clay and a specially designed skeletal model in a classroom setting. Educators will learn how to implement a unique curriculum system which helps students create a kinesthetic map of the human anatomy. They will acquire the knowledge to engage science students with immediate, hands-on learning using a proven method that is na-tionally recognized to increase student retention and test scores. This workshop will emphasize directional terms, planes, cavities, and landmarks on the skeletal model. Focus will be placed on building the rotator cuff.

This session will outline what, exactly, assistive technology is and its potential to enhance all aspects of life for those experiencing disability. Different types of assistive technology will be discussed, as will the Michigan Assistive Technology Program. This program is interactive. Participants will be given the opportunity to ask questions and engage with assistive technology. Through participation in this session, attendees will be able to: define what assistive technology is, have increased knowledge of various types of AT available, have a clearer understanding of how AT can benefit students/individuals with disabilities, how to obtain funding for AT in Michigan.

Technology strategies to improve food safety knowledge and improve ServSafe Manager Exam test scores. Attendees will learn about a new Virtual Reality Game in development to help students learn at play and the ServSafe Smart Study Modules. Embracing technology that has a record of improving knowledge and understanding of curriculum to ensure your student’s success.

Learn how Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeships can provide your students successful paid learning and educational opportunities to build their career pathway. Explore one real-life case study that includes essential partnerships between CTE instructors, Northwest Michigan Works! Apprenticeship Services, a dedicated employer and a stellar apprentice.

In this session, participants will hear from the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and the Michigan Department of Education about how they partnered to meet the requirements of a new state law. This law charged the MDE to provide students and families with an informational packet of postsecondary opportunities. Join us to learn how the team has enhanced Pathfinder resources to share additional information about the following: earning early college credit in high school, getting a job, serving one’s community, accessing college, and available financial resources to support postsecondary learning. Participants will also share ideas on how to continue enhancing the resources.

Learn about the new streamlined process for building both statewide and individual articulation/postsecondary credit agreements. Attendees will access new templates for agreements, student applications and resources to conduct meetings with colleges/universities. Courses that align with programs on a statewide level will be shared. An invitation to join a workgroup focused on building agreements throughout the state will be provided.

In order to ensure access and equity to career readiness tools for all of our graduates, MISD Consultants Sarah Strohbeck and Michelle Marcellin have collaborated with county Alternative High School English teachers to align English 12 standards with meaningful career readiness and post-secondary planning activities. This curriculum is broken into 9 relevant units that leverages the English 12 credit requirement to ensure graduates receive the same post-secondary planning tools as traditional high school graduates receive.

The Kent ISD Career Readiness Department has partnered with Grandville High School, Amway and Inforum Michigan to pilot a five-part series for female/nonbinary students grades ninth through twelfth to explore the nontraditional career pathway of manufacturing. The series includes an overview of the pathways within manufacturing, mentorship, soft skills development, industry tours, job shadows, and more. This workshop is an opportunity to learn about the development, implementation and progress of this pilot.

Michigan teens are invited to participate in Strive for a Safer Drive, a high school safe driving initiative. Any Michigan high school is eligible to apply for a $1000 grant to campaign for traffic safety. Participating schools will submit a final presentation showcasing their campaign. All High Schools will have an opportunity to attend Ford Driving Skills for Life hands-on event with professional drivers.

This program provides information on motivating and educating the new generation of Public Safety learners. The program identifies each generation of learners, and targets how they learn. This program will also identify new ways to deliver the programing, and new ways to attract the right people to your programs. If you have or have thought about teaching Public Safety in your schools, you should attend this program.

Social Emotional Learning is a research based approach that is being implemented in many school settings. The Wexford-Missaukee ISD Career Technical Center is in year three of this implementation. This session will showcase the steps in our journey and may assist you in bringing SEL to your students.

Michigan Tech’s Unboxed Challenges™ allow students to apply STEM to real-world scenarios while developing skills in teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. Simulations are designed to help students build confidence in a high-pressure environment as they work in small groups to solve puzzles on topics like lean manufacturing and other critical industries.
